Solar Patio Lights

If you have a patio, you require outdoor lights so as to light it up. Many homeowners desire to enjoy their night sittings in their patio amidst illuminated lights and enjoying their drink or dinner. However, they tend to refrain from doing so considering the escalating electricity costs. With solar patio lights, this dream can now become a reality.

At present, there are many manufacturers producing solar patio lights. Also, these lights are available in different innovative styles and designs that can suit anybody needs. Some examples include:

Barbecue Lights: These lights come under the category of spot lights. However, these are portable and light weight. Also, they contain an adjustable head light that can be used to focus on the specific area. Whenever anybody plans for a barbecue during night time, these lights can be preferred as a source of illumination.

Wall-mounted lights: These lights can be installed on the wall and can be used to light up the entire patio.

Free-standing lights: In case one feels that wall-mounted lights are not sufficient for the entire patio or when the patio is really large, one can opt for these free-standing lights that can be easily carried and installed at any place in the patio.

Hanging lights: These are another variation that is very much popular and can add an element of elegance and style to your patio. An additional advantage with these lights is that they are automatic and fitted with light sensors. This means these lights can turn on and off depending on the availability of the sunlight.

Some other variations include lamp posts, lanterns, step lights, patio deck lights and torches. One can select any of them depending on one’s needs and requirements. Lights that can be used to illuminate the decks are different from those that can light up the stairway. Most importantly, these lights can be installed in any part of the patio so as to get the desired illumination. Interestingly, lighting effect changes with the location.

Another major reason for getting a light in the patio is for safety and security. One can use motion sensor lights for this purpose. Placement is another factor that comes into play while selecting a patio light that is powered by solar energy. Also, the type of activity that will be performed in the patio determines the type of solar patio lighting. For example, activities such barbecue cooking, gardening or swimming require more illumination in comparison to activities such as relaxing or strolling in the patio.

As like any other appliances, patio lights powered by solar energy do have their own set of disadvantages.

Installation of outdoor patio solar lights can be a bit expensive unless the government provides any support in the form of rebates. This is because the solar appliances use integrated solar panels for harnessing the solar energy. These solar panels are made of advanced photovoltaic cells whose manufacturing cost is extremely high.

The second disadvantage about these lights is that they cannot be used in regions where there is no sunlight. Also, solar lights are not much effective on days when there is no sunlight such as an overcast, raining, foggy, snowing or storming weather. The situation can be really problematic in those days if one doesn’t have any backup power source.

Also, solar lights that are available in the market do not come along with battery back up systems. One can either invest an extra amount of money for buying a battery system or can operate the system using electricity from the grid. In any case, the cost is going to increase.
Considering the fact that the benefits one can reap by installing a solar light in the patio or any other part of the house, the disadvantages listed above seem to be insignificant. Moreover, one can get back the cost of the initial expenditure incurred on getting a solar device within very few years.
