Solar
Cells
This is where
solar energy begins - the solar cell
Whether or not you knew it at the time, you have more than
likely seen a solar cell at least once in your lifetime. Solar
cells have been around for a number of years and have been used
to power a number of different appliances and devices. The term
has been more and more popular in recent years as more and more
people are trying to protect the environment while saving money
by going green. So what exactly are solar cells? What can they
do for you? And why have they become so increasingly popular in
the last couple of years? After reading this article you should
be able to answer all of the questions above while
understanding the benefits of solar cells.
Ok, I heard the term solar cell so what is it?
Well, a solar cell, also known as a photovoltaic cell, is
a device that is capable of transforming solar energy into
electricity.
This is done using the photovoltaic effect. Simply put a
solar cell is a device which is used to capture energy from the
sun while a photovoltaic cell is a device that captures energy
from an unknown source. To power large appliances it is
possible to combine or assemble together a large number of
solar cells. A group of solar cells assembled together is
usually referred to as solar modules which are linked to
photovoltaic arrays.
Solar cells have been used for many years to power small
appliances and devices. The most commonly thought of solar
powered device of the device has to be small calculators. These
are the types of calculators that required no batteries at all
and were functional anytime they happened to be reaching
sunlight. This is possible because they were embedded with
solar cells on the front which transformed the sunlight into
electricity and in turn powering the calculator. The small
solar cells were able to deliver sufficient energy required by
the calculator to power the calculator at all times. Some of
these calculators weren’t even equipped with an on and off
button.
Of course, other devices of the past were capable of running
off solar energy as well including sun lights. These are the
lights that are placed in your yard or garden. They generally
gather energy throughout the day using the sun and a group of
solar cells equipped on top of the light itself. Most of these
lights normally don’t come on until it begins getting dark
outside. If it was sunny enough on that particular day then the
light should have stored enough energy to be able to operate
all throughout the night without going dim. If the light
happens to go dim then either something is wrong with the solar
cells or they just didn’t receive enough sunlight during the
day.
As technology has advanced throughout the years, solar
cells have become more and more high tech. They are now
capable of heating the water using in your home or swimming
pool and even powering any device or appliance in your home
that runs off of electricity. Unlike fossil fuels, using solar
power doesn’t emit any harmful pollutants or greenhouse gases
into the atmosphere. Solar energy is also less expensive than
conventional electricity. Since sunlight is completely free or
charge you will never have to pay another electric bill. Of
course, the initial cost of a solar energy system is expensive
but you will end up making your money back and saving more down
the road.
