Solar Batteries
Facts
The batteries that are powered by the solar energy are way
different from the ordinary ones.
• The most important criterion that determines the value and
efficiency of a battery is its cycle. In a battery, a cycle can
be described as the process of discharge and recharge and the
amount of discharge that occurs in a battery is termed as the
depth of discharge. Based on this cycle, batteries can be
divided into deep cycle and shallow cycle batteries. The
batteries that are used inside solar appliances are deep-cycle
batteries.
• A deep-cycle battery can be described as one where 80% of the
power is discharged and then gets recharged.
• The basic objective of these batteries is to store the
electricity generated using the solar energy and provides power
to the appliance whenever required for a prolonged duration of
time.
• These deep-cycle batteries are different from the customary
ones in the sense that they release the electrical power in a
slow and steady manner and maintain the output for long
durations. This is because sun remains for only a certain
period of the day. In case of traditional batteries such as
those used in the cars, the power output is sudden, very high
and short-term so as to keep the engine running.
• With deep-cycle batteries, one has to no longer worry about
power supply during nights or on a rainy or gloomy day when
there is very less or absolutely no sunlight.
• Also, maintenance of deep-cycle batteries is neither
difficult nor time-consuming.
